Installing IIS on Windows 7

Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services, formerly called Internet Information Server) is a set of Internet-based services for servers created by Microsoft to be used with Microsoft Windows. It is the world’s second most popular web server only after the Apache HTTP Server. The servers provide services for File Transfer Protocol, SMTP for e-mail and HTTP/HTTPS for web server. In this article we will explain you how to install The Microsoft IIS Webserver on your computer. The IIS Server is NOT available for Microsoft Windows 7 Home edition as they say the Home edition was not meant for networking. So you must have the Proffessional edition or the Ultimate edition of Windows 7 installed on your computer for installing the IIS Webserver. You will also be needing the Windows 7 DVD during this install. Now, Follow the steps below:

1. Place the Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Proffessional DVD into your DVD-Rom Drive.

2. Goto Start > Control Panel > Programs

3. From the dialog box that opens, click on Turn Windows features on or off

4. This brings another dialog box that contains a list many Windows related services

5. Check the box for ‘Internet Information Services (IIS)‘ leaving all the default installation settings intact. If you would like to install additional services, then expand each option and select them.

6. Once IIS is installed on your machine you can view your home page in a web browser by typing ‘http://localhost’ (you can substitute ‘localhost’ for the name of your computer) into the address bar of your web browser. If you have not placed your web site into the default directory you should now be looking at the IIS documentation.

Off topic stuff: Computer case review, Silverstone PS01

Ok, so the other day I bought my first PC case, a Silverstone PS01. Although not huge by any means, its black exterior with a sideways grin n the front dominates all other kit in my tech lair. It came with two 120mm fans and spots for one more 120mm fan and a 80mm fan on the see-through perspex window. One thing that the case does well is that the front panel’s USB ports are on the top of the case, making it easier to have a camera and iPod etc, all plugged in at the same time.

The main thing that I liked about the case was its value, with three hdd bays and room for 6 optical disc drives, a side window, ample space for mucking around in and reasonable cable management, all for the measly sum of $95.00 (from Ascent, where it was cheapest at the time of writing).

Situations that I would highly recommend this case would be as a server because of its front layout, which is compatible with most hot-swappable drive bays, and its efficient cooling, as a budget gaming case, or as just a cheap spare box to do fun projects on, like playing with Linux.

True cost of the iPhone in NZ

Hi there:)

Along with most gadget loving Kiwis, I am very excited at the prospect of being able to buy an iPhone without having to perform some serious jiggery-pokery to get them to work properly on Vodafone.

But one question is still blocking my mind from being certain that I will buy one for the US$200 asking price on release (Approx. NZ$260), which is how much they will cost to run on the network. In other countries, prepaid iPhones will be available which will cost somewhere between NZ$1000-$1200, so I doubt that Vodafone will allow consumers to sign up for their cheapest plan, which costs a $20 a month including airtime only.

The Vodafone website is very vague about what type of plan “a great On Account plan…”, this could mean any plan Vodafone has to offer. My educated guess is that they will use a You Choose so as to best show off all the 3g data plans they have, e.g. the new dollar a day plan for 10mb usage. Personally, I have free wi-fi access more or less everywhere I go, so I definetly don’t want to have to pay for a set amount of usage every month.
